Default Class of ships?

Has there been any word towards the class of fighters we may have?

Small fighters, frigates, bombers, heavy fighters, super fighters (corvettes/tactical ships, etc) high speed, small/med/large mining craft, small/med/large cargo ships, etc.

Am really curious to the different options we are going to be able to fly.

Not really, beyond what you can guess from looking at screenshots. Hermann has said, however that there will likely be more than one type of craft in each classification (e.g. medium fighter) each with their own strengths and weaknesses; this will go some way to avoiding the problems of JGE’s predecessor where there was a "perfect" ship and loadout from which people rarely deviated.

Whilst I completely agree with the loadout part of that statement (lets face it JGC could lose 80% of it’s equipment variations and noone except the lvl 0 newbs would even relise)….

Not too sure about the ‘perfect’ ship.

Sure there were personal preferences but that’s unavoidable and is probably healthy to have people have ‘favourite ships’ as it makes them feel more attached to what their flying (Meeps and his Primia for example ).
The Dragon was labeled as a slow turning worthless near-stationary fluxing platform by alot of people who tried using it, but put Algore behind the controls of one and suddenly its a beast, whilst other people found the ‘perfect ship’ as the MF rather then the HF….

Only exception I’d really give to that were the quants…. for some reason 98% of all Quantar never touched anything outside of the Phoon, and the other 2% were bombers.

Don’t be pedantic, Tiki – you know what I meant

And I only ever flew for Quantar (albeit in a Scout/Ranger).

It would be awesome to see the number of ships for each Nation match those of Freespace 2. That way it would bring a lot of diversity and choice to the game.

Overflood of ships isn’t always a good thing in my books. Personally I’d prefere to see more variation in equipment and possible combat styles via modx/equipment rather then seeing 5 types of Oct, quant and sol LFs, 4 types of Oct,Quant and Sol Fighters, 3 differant types of tows and so forth.

Reason being it just over complications balancing issues when you got to not only balance each ship class to other classes but to 3 or 4 other sub-types of each class.

Also it makes sorting the "I can’t master how to compete against ship xxx, so it must be a balance problem! Nerf xxx or this game is epic fail and I’m leaving!" from the real balancing issues a nightmare.

((And before Its brought up I’m fully aware that "EVE has done it though!!!!!!!!"… but then again theres a big differance to balancing a ship that is nothing but static figures to other ships static figures, and balancing ships that are 80% dependant on the pilot itself.))

I understand the possibility of overpowered ships but if anything it was the lack of ship variety between classes that caused nerfing in JGC (from what I know). The nix seems to be the main choice for players here (also the typhoon and intensity).

I certainly don’t mean flooding the game with more than 3 ships in each class, but don’t you think variety would give a greater challenge to the game?? And seeing as this game is about player skill, wouldn’t that just make it the player’s fault? i.e an incentive to practice

Closed and open beta will be the perfect opportunity to sort these issues out.

.

Also a high diversity of ships will give more people the chance to become a "good" pilot, as there will probably be a class/type of ship that suits their specific talents. Like running away very very fast….

It is my duty to spread the word of Scare Quotes . Not that Wikipedia is necessarily the best link.

I’d like a bit of variety between ships but then you could also have a smaller selection of ships with the same number of hardpoints/slots and basic stats that can then be customised by the selection of equipment. I’m probably more concerned about looking cool and flying fast towards my doom rather than having a ship that’s any good in a fight anyway .
