Default Will beta have PvE/PvP servers?

Will the closed beta have both server styles available, or will the beta testers be testing strictly on one or the other?

Why do you want to know that now? Can’t you wait for the beta and then see what we’ll get?

Nobody knows – but Hermann did say that both playstyles would be evaluated during beta and that may influence the type of servers available later in the process.

they said only a limited number of pilots will be let into beta. I’m curious if that limited number will be spread across two servers rather then one.

Also, it seems like a majority of the people who talk on these forums will be on the non-consensual PvP server, so i’m curious what will happen if only 50-100 people are on the ‘PvE’ server for testing…

Whether i can wait or not does not matter, as I have no choice other then to wait.

I asked in IRC about this the other day. Of course, I didn’t get a very revealing answer. It appears that currently they are using one server type with safe-zones – whatever ‘safe-zone’ means. I think this is so that the community isn’t split up.

At some point, ND are going to have to make a decision on what type(s) of servers they are going to provide, and stick to that decision.

I think this is one of those things they should let us try out in beta and then they have to go off and make a decision. The trouble is that I have no idea how long it would take them to set up different types of server (pure consensual, all non-consensual or zoned-consensual, for example). I don’t know how long it would take us to test (two weeks???). Then you’d have the usual shouting matches and ritual pouting.

I already have opinions of what I think is right and wrong. It’s bad for me to be prejudiced about this, and I’d like to test a few of my assumptions.

I have a feeling that they may not be sure if Sharding will even be necessary.

I don’t care personally. I would have fun testing out the game mechanics just the same. Finding and reporting bugs is the important part of Beta. The skill that matters during beta is the skill in writing step by step instructions on steps to replicate the problem so the bug can be found and fixed by a developer or a 2nd level escalation engineer.

I’m sure there will be both servers. As the PVE mechanics would need to be tested for exploit ability.

I think it would be stupid to have both servers . Beta testing should be to evaluate all game styles . It will need everyone focusing on the testing parameters for that session. Test the missions, test the economy, test the flight dynamics and balancing. Then at the end test the server styles once everything else is working to optimum. Splitting the testers in beta would be just plain stupid.

I would think it would be a good idea to have closed beta with just a single server so everypme can focus more on bug-fixing, and split it up for open beta so everyone can actually switch to their playstyle before launch.

Just from my past experience of beta testing, I would venture to guess that they would use one server type to start. Probably the PvE server, so that both styles could be used.

After testing that server type, I could easily see ND switching the server types for awhile. Or even have the PvE server open certain days of the week and the other server open the other couple days.

Beta generally isnt an "open the server and let em play" type thing. Its usually only open for a few hours a day certain days of the week. Usually runs that way until closer to release and most of the bugs/testing is done. So I can see them switching the server types around and such.
